Botanicals Harmful to Ingest During Pregnancy

Every woman’s physical constitution is different, so what one pregnant woman may tolerate well, another will not abide. Most of the botanicals on this list are safe to consume for those who are not pregnant. Almost all of the following botanicals are listed on medical websites as being potentially harmful to mother and fetus. In many cases, not enough research has been done; doctors need to be very careful about pregnancy and nutrition. Here are listed only common potentially harmful tea making botanicals. Throughout this manual, others have been mentioned. Obviously, you should not consume any of the botanicals on the previous page’s “poisonous” list either. For a complete list, check out pregnancy websites such as www.motherlove.com and www.naturalark.com.

The following botanicals make the list because they affect the hormones, are too strong or irritating, or bring on bleeding or contractions:

Aloe vera, angelica, barberry, bee balm, black cohosh, blue cohosh, black walnut, blessed thistle, borage, buckthorn, cascara sagrada, catnip, chaste tree berry, chicory, damiana, dong quai, elecampane, fenugreek, feverfew, gentian, goldenseal, horehound, juniper berries, licorice, lovage, motherwort, Oregon grape root, osha, parsley, pennyroyal, rosemary, sage, sarsaparilla, Siberian ginseng, thyme, tumeric, yarrow
